kindergarten curriculum

Our kindergarten is an independent Alberta Education Program whose mandate is to provide a strong readiness program particularly in the areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Art and freeplay activities also address readiness skills and are included in the daily schedule.

Language Arts: The children will be introduced to beginning consonant sounds. Understandings gained through discussion and researching factual books form the backbone of the language arts program.

Early Reading: The children will enjoy poetry, fingerplays, and simple stories posted on language charts. They will ‘read’ from books created in the classroom. The children will be introduced to word recognition skills.

Mathematics: They will be introduced to the principals of measurement, graphing and patterning. They will investigate the properties of numbers 1-10 using concrete objects.

Music: The children will sing, dance, move to music and enjoy drama under the leadership of our music specialist, Mrs. Stephanie Darke.

French: This is an introduction to French led by Mrs. Tomlinson.

Art: Each week a 45 minute period of art focuses upon the social studies, literature, or science projects.

Cooking: Every other week the children make their own snack. The sensory experiences of smell, taste, sight, and touch make this experience a highlight of the week for most children.

Physical Education: Two thirty minute sessions per week are scheduled in the gym.

Freeplay Time: Our small group setting provides a unique opportunity for children to come together as a community recognizing and appreciating individual differences.

Early Intervention Services: Children requiring early intervention programs receive timely, consistent, and effective services from qualified speech, occupational, and physical therapists as well as qualified educational assistants.
